Adequate but memorable for all the wrong reasons. The establishment has 3 stars, and having stayed there for four nights, it's easy to see why. Let’s start with the positives. The self-catering room was neat and clean, albeit sparsely furnished and decorated. The kitchen was typical of virtually every self-catering facility I’ve ever stayed in—just enough to make a basic meal, but no frills such as kitchen scissors or a decent cutlery drawer. As always, there was nowhere to store food (as in non-refrigerated foodstuffs). The lodge is also situated far enough from the busy central area of town, so it’s quiet and peaceful, and there are no streetlights shining through the bedroom window at night. That’s about the best I can say for the place. The staff were, with the exception of one person, surly, sulky, and sullen, and their body language communicated that they would rather be anywhere else. At no point was I made to feel welcome. Unfortunately, having booked via the website and not directly, it was not possible to book and pay for breakfasts in advance, even though I had noted it in my booking. Rather than responding appropriately to what was clearly a miscommunication, the issue became a far bigger deal than it should have been. The only thing à la carte about the breakfast was the pricing; the food itself was mediocre. The cherry on top of all this was being accused the day after I left of not paying for my breakfasts—because the lady I had dealt with was not on duty and had apparently failed to communicate with the other staff members. It seems that looking in the receipt book to confirm my payment was a bridge too far for them. Overall, I was unimpressed with this establishment, and as a result, I recommended to colleagues who will be in Middelburg for two weeks that they find somewhere else to stay.
